Milngavie Trail Race June 2023

A firm favourite - it's the Milngavie Trail Race!

Three Harriers Kevin, James and myself (Chris) signed up for the seventh running of the Milngavie Trail Race organised by Graeme Reid and the Glasgow 20th Scout Group.

This race is an 8.5-mile multi-terrain route run partly on the West Highland Way trail and partly through Mugdock Park, with the first 4 miles or so ascending to its highest point before looping back to Lennox Park in Milngavie where it started.

Kevin made his debut in the race whereas James and I had both run the race several times before and knew well the testing first half of ascent which was made worse by a very warm and muggy morning. No water is provided on the course and I took a welcome shower and drink from a lady in a bush with a hosepipe halfway round (cue Kenneth Williams), further on Allan from WERR popped up and gave me another desperately needed drink which gave me a boost to push towards the finish. Thanks again!!

Kevin was just back from injury and enjoyed an easy’ish run round but vowed to come back when fitter to do a better time, James ran round with no problems recording his second fastest time and I enjoyed a good run finishing faster than last year which I was very happy with. Our old mate Finn Boyd ran round in 1hr 9 mins 23s and enjoyed the run and hanging about with old mates.

Highlight of the day as usual was the home baking cake stall plus Kevin’s face when he had to donate a fiver for us all as he had no change, thanks dad!! He made up for it by winning a meal for two in the free draw at the end, result!

The race was won by Paul Murphy (Unattached) in 52mins 40s and first female was Nicola Dawson from Westerlands in 1hr 07 05.

Maryhill results:

Kevin Campbell 33rd 1:08:57

James Prior 68th 1:14:33

Chris Hever 161st 1:28:02

There were 238 finishers from 244 starters.
