I ran the Edinburgh marathon, which is part of the festival weekend of running. The junior runs and 10K are held on the Saturday and the half marathon and the marathon are held on the Sunday. I haven’t run a marathon since 1998 and I hated it so much, I swore I would not run another. However, persuaded by some very deaf friends, whonever heard the words “never again” I set off on a very wet and windy Sunday.
The course starts in Edinburgh City Centre but soon leaves and heads towards Lieth and follows the coast beyond Musselburgh before turning back on itself for the last 10K or so and finishing in Musselburgh. It was fantastically flat and fantastically pretty and incredibly windy. The course and the crowds were great but the finish of the race was a bit chaotic and by the time you had collected the goody bag and your baggage, you had been stationary for far too long.
All in all I had a great day out and would do the course again (if they change the finish). I finished in 4.12 and although I had no finishing time in my head on the start line, I was just wanting to finish, the usual post race analysis of what ifs produced a very large list and I think I could be returning…
