The Cumbernauld 10k is always a highlight of my race calendar, running through the area I grew up in at an always well organised event on a fast course. This year, I arrived a bit lacking in sharpness but hoping my recent increased mileage would be enough to push me through to a reasonable enough performance.
The weather was near perfect for running, with only a slight breeze as over 1000 runners took to the starting line at Broadwood Stadium. I settled in shortly behind the large pack chasing the 40 minute pacer and managed to maintain a steady enough speed, with only a slight wobble on the long stretch out before looping back onto Broadwood Loch. From there, it’s completely flat for the final 3km, so an opportunity to grit the teeth and race against the clock. It was touch and go as I re-entered the stadium wether or not I would make my sub-41 goal, but a sprint to the line saw me just sneak it in 40:55. Cat was also representing the blues and ran really well to easily beat her 50 min target, coming in at 48:15 to knock a good chunk off her Brian Goodwin time back in June. Well done Cat!
After finishing, it was good to cheer on some friends and family who were taking party, with a special mention to my good friend Scott who clocked an impressive PB of 41:35 (not bad for a double amputee!) and my mum who completed her 3rd 10k and was really happy with her time of 1:18:00. Also good to catch up with Maryhill Mafia comrade Gavin, who smashed out a sub 40 after taking on the Kyles 10 mile with Kevin the previous day. A great day out as always and already looking forward to next year.
