Beragh 5 Miler

On Saturday 15th April, I flew the flag for Maryhill in the Beragh 5 mile road race. Taking place in the small village of Beragh in County Tyrone, Northern Ireland, the race was ideally located close to Beths family home where we were staying over the Easter break.

Close to 200 runners took part in the event, which follows a circular route across quiet roads in the picturesque mid-Tyrone countryside. The course is fairly undulating, with one big hill round the 5km mark as you pass through the excellently named town of  Sixmilecross. Probably marginally more hilly than the Glasgow Uni 5 miler. Despite its small local billing, the race was impeccably organised with chip timing, plenty of marshaling and a fabulous post-race buffet for all.

Keen to do Maryhill proud on foreign soil, I over enthusiastically lined up in the front row for the start, and actually led the race round the first corner before normal service resumed and I fell back. Nevertheless, I managed to maintain a steady pace of around 4 minutes/km for the most part and finished strongly in 32:17 for a new 5 mile PB. Really enjoyable run and one I hope to do again next year.

The race was won by local favorite Stephen Duncan of the Omagh Harriers in 26:29, with Pauline McGurren of Sperrin Harriers winning the ladies race in 31.29.

16th – Scott Coulter (Maryhill Harriers) – 32.19
