DAAA X Country Relays

Maryhill Harriers hosted the relays this year in Maryhill Park. Kenny did a fantastic job organising it and setting out a 4k course using the track, the bottom pitches and the park. The club also did a great job in helping out, either setting up the course or marshalling or both.

So a big thanks to Carol, Heather, Ross, Margaret, Caroline, Scott, Andy ,George and Chris.

Finally a thank you to Nimral who provided surprise support.

The conditions were perfect for running last Saturday, the ground was dry and the park was bathed in warm autumn sunshine. Maryhill had two men’s team running:

Team A; Craig Gilmour, Scott Coulter, Craig White and Andrew Sutherland

Team B; George Young (who stepped in at the last minute), David McLenaghan, Chris Hever and Duncan Riddell

As I was 4th man on the second team I had a clear run at the course, which I enjoyed. On my first lap of the park my fellow harriers tried to convince me that Andy was just behind me, but I did not give in to the temptation to look back, reckoning that this was just a wind up. Having completed the top loop I crossed the fence and set off around the bottom section. No locals were on hand this year to provide encouragement on the climb back up to the marsh, and even the marsh was not really that wet, so I felt good and I was going well.

Upon entering the park again I stretched out along the hedge and still felt reasonably strong going around the small loop at the back of the park. With a final push along the top of the park, this time with some genuine support from the club, I managed to finish in 17:32.

I really enjoyed the run and the course, which I would describe as a proper cross country course.
