Last month I travelled north to Caithness for the 2nd annual Turbine 10K at Baillie Wind Farm, West of Thurso. Needless to say, it was pretty windy! However, it was also a lovely clear, sunny day which meant there were spectacular views across the Pentland Firth to Orkney and along the North West Highlands to the mountains of Sutherland.
The 10K was a trail race along a very undulating dirt track which a number of significant hills. At a couple of points, the course also left the trail travelling across open moors.
From a pretty sizable field, the race was won by Matthew Sutherland (Edinburgh University Hares and Hounds) in a new course record of 35.47, followed by Kevin Cormack (North Highland Harriers) in second and in a time of 37.11. Representing the mighty blues, I came home in third place in a time of 37.46. First lady was Emily Tomlinson (Inverness Harriers) in 43.24. Overall, it was a really fun, challenging race to do with amazing views around Caithness. Many thanks to the North Highland Harriers for their excellent organisation and to the marshalls for making sure I didntt get lost. Also many thanks for the teas, coffee and lovely cakes in the marquee afterwards. Finally, special mention should go to my nine-year old nephew, Leo Shearer who won the 4K fun run and family bragging rights for the day!
