A lone Maryhill Harrier toed the start line at this years Scottish Veteran Harriers Club open 5k.
Taking place in the small Clydebank industrial estate that features in both the Dunky Wright 5k and Polaroid 10k, this is a fast and flat 5k consisting of just over 3 and a half (clockwise) laps of the estate.
Straight from the start gun it was eventual winner, Robert Gilroy of Cambuslang, who established an instant lead. After about 1km it was Mick McLoone (Greenock) and I who battled for the 2nd position. Changing positions on a few occasions during the laps, and having to battle a strong headwind along one of the straights, we ran almost side by side until about 600m to go. It was only then – with a change of pace, and with the wind at my back – that I was able to take a lead that I maintained until the finish. 2nd position overall, in a time of 16:27 (PB). The race was won by Robert Gilroy in a time of 15:17, with Claire McArthur of Shettleston 1st lady in a time of 18:48.
