Scott & Cat race the Newton Road Runners Newton 10k

On Saturday 12th November, Cat and I travelled over to Newton to take part in their inaugural 10k road race. This new addition to the calendar was organised by the Newton Road Runners in memory of their member, Cat Gaskell, who tragically passed away in 2021. The club put on a great event in Cat’s memory, raising over £1,400 for Penumbra and spreading a really positive message about mental health awareness. Thanks to all at NRR and the local community for putting on such a good event.

The race itself was an out and back along the Clyde Walkway path, crossing the Cambuslang bridge towards Rutherglen and back the same way. For a riverside cycle path, I was expecting flat and fast, but there were a few surprisingly tricky inclines to contend with. I haven’t managed to do much speed training since the end of our merit league season (and the birth of my daughter!) so I wasn’t expecting too much, but went out at 40 minute pace and only lost a little bit of time on the climbs in the 2nd half of the race. Managed to get into a mini battle with the 2nd female finisher which spurred me on to conquer the final hill and finish in 40.42. Cat had a great run also and was happy with her 48.41 time. Definitely a race I will return to and a very welcome addition to the calendar.
