This weekend saw the start of this year’s merit league with the McAndrew Road Relay Race taking place as usual in Jordanhill. Saturday saw torrential rain in Glasgow right up until nearly the start of the race when it eased slightly to a light drizzle. This made conditions pretty good for running apart from the odd large puddle we had to dodge. The men’s race was won by Ronhill Cambuslang in a time of 1.06.03 and the ladies race was won by our neighbours, Garscube Harriers in 59.38. Due to Maryhill Harriers traveling far and wide to lots of races this weekend, we only managed one men’s team and 2/3 of a ladies team. In the men’s team, John Weir took the first leg and finished with a time of 20.30 which was faster than his time last year (32nd vet male). Despite running the 2nd leg, Mick was the fastest Harrier of the day finishing in 20.01 (22nd vet male). Chris Heever then ran the 3rd leg in 25.49 (74th vet male). I ran the last leg finishing in 21.00 (58th senior male). Overall, our time was 1.26.58 (21st out of 34 teams).
In the ladies race, Margaret Peebles ran the first leg in a time of 26.30 (23rd vet female). Laura Muirhead then ran the 2nd leg in her first McAndrew relay race finishing in 26.42 (35th senior female). Many thanks to Joe and Caroline Hassan for the great support in the pouring rain. Many thanks to Duncan for giving us club funds to buy tea and cakes afterwards (the cakes were great!!).
