Andy: “The first leg of this year’s 30th anniversary Polaroid 10K series took place in Helensburgh last night. The race as usual started along from the school on Cardross Road. It was the usual course through the residential area and then the long straights West before turning and coming all the way back finishing at the school. The course was slightly modified this year to keep us off the main roads and on as many pavements as possible. The slightly different course didn’t make much difference, but the weather did! The very hot and sunny conditions had an effect on everyone adding about a couple of minutes to most folks’ times. This coupled with a stiff sea breeze made for a tougher middle section of this race compare to usual.”
Scott: “Along with Kieran and Craig G, I tried to set off fairly gently, knowing that a few hills feature early on. Eventually the other two left me behind and I managed to tuck in behind Pamela McCrossan of Clydesdale, whom I know runs at a roughly similar pace. Despite a late rally I was unable to reel Craig in, but still managed to take over a minute off my time from last year. Craig W and Kieran had a good battle further ahead, with Craig managing to hold on to take the 2nd Harrier place by 1 second. A well organised race as always from the Polaroid series and great support from the locals throughout. The pre-race chat was all around how much of an impact the warm conditions would make, and the general consensus at the end was that it turned into a bit of a slog for all concerned.”
Andy: “As always, this is a big race, with 776 runners completing the course. First home was Paul Sorrie from Shettleston Harriers in 32.27. First lady in 21st position was Jennifer Wetton from Central AC in 36.35.”
The results for the mighty blues were:
40th: Andy Sutherland (38.22)
105th: Craig White (41.43)
106th: Kieran Sulliven (41.44)
120th: Craig Gilmour (42.04)
131st: Scott Coulter (42.25)
Despite the high temperatures, the race was good practice for the main event, which is our club 10K championship race at Clydebank next week……
