Great Womans 10k

Last Sunday saw this year’s Glasgow Women’s 10K take place. Contrary to the last few years (and as far as I can remember!), the route was around the West End of the city – not the usual South Side. 6000 runners started on Kelvin Way, and meandered around many of the new (ish) features of the city that I’m sure the powers-that-be were keen to show off! Through Kelvingrove park, down to the new transport museum on the Clyde, along the river then across to the science museum, past Pacific Quay and the Hydro, across the Squinty Bridge, up Argyle street, then a final, slightly torturous, meandering around the lovely tenements before finishing back at one of the side entrances to Kelvingrove park.

A nice route, although I have to say I found it a bit hillier than the old route. Liz preferred it but my heart still lies with the South Side route, I have to say. It’s hard to beat the support and hospitality of the residents down there, although let’s give the Westenders the benefit of the doubt – it’s only the first year!

The heat was pretty torturous, so times were slow across the board. The race was won for a second year in a row by Gemma Rankin (Kilbarchan AC) 36.59.

Maryhill results;

Natalie Somerville – 43.33 (position 29)
Liz Towers – 57.05 (position 825)
