Last Sunday, the 4th Castle of Mey 10K took place, the most northernly 10K on the UK mainland. This year’s race reverted to the original flat course that follows the north coastline (next to the Pentland Firth) through Skarfskerry for about 4.5K before turning south on Burn Road and following the main A836 road back to Mey and the Castle.
The race was run in gale force winds with the first 4.5K directly into the wind (it was so windy several runners around me lost their race numbers!). However, some time was made up at 7K when we eventually got the wind at our backs. Despite the challenging conditions, 380 hardy runners completed the course.
As in previous years, the runners were cheered home by a passionate and boisterous crowd. Last year’s winner, Jack Trevelyan of North Highland Harriers won again in a time of 35.59. First lady was Oonagh Dunnet of Edinburgh AC (41.08). The mighty blues were represented by Andy Sutherland who finished 9th with a time of 40.11.
