The annual Brian Goodwin 10k, hosted by Bellahouston Harriers, took place on the evening of 20/06/2014. This year, Maryhill Harriers were represented by myself, Aimie, Chris, Cat and Fletcher.
The race itself starts and finishes at Cartha Rugby Club, Dumbreck Road and takes in Pollok Park and the surrounding roads. Despite this being a fairly flat course throughout, the conditions were made a little tougher due to the race coming at the tail end of a Glasgow heat wave (as anyone who was as training on the previous Tuesday would testify!) With this in mind, I was careful not to start off too fast and hoped to pick my time up gradually as the race progressed.
The race contained a particularly fast field, with nearly a fifth of the runners completing at around the 40 minute mark. Despite not getting my first 5k pacing quite right, I was relatively pleased with a finishing time of 44.47, just over a minute slower than my PB set the previous Sunday.
The real drama occurred slightly behind me, where Chris and Cat were locked in an epic battle with each other for the first few kilometres, before Chris just managed to nip in front! The race was won by Luke Traynor from Giffnock North AAC with an impressive time of 30.26.
Overall this was a great, well organised race and one I will definitely be back for next year. There was a good support throughout, chipped timing and a piper at the start and finish line, much to Caroline’s enjoyment! And a big thanks to Fletcher for the transport.
As always with this race, all runners received a medal and t-shirt, plus a free beer and burger at the post race BBQ. Not bad at all for a £12 entry fee. Maryhill Harriers results below :
159th Scott Coulter – 44:47

222nd Cat Nisbet – 47:36
