Bannerman 5k

The annual Maryhill Harriers Bannerman 5k took place on Thursday 3rd May at our usual route in Dawsholm Park. Despite a bit of rain and wind during the day, the course held up in most parts with only a few patches of mud to navigate on what is always a very challenging course. 8 runners took part in the event with Margaret being the sole representative from the ladies section,

After a methodical marking of the course using some flour nicked from my kitchen, Micks countdown set us off on our way. Kevin was back to defend his title from last year, and set off quickly followed by Craig Perrie. A storming first lap however saw Kevin gallop away on the non-wooded section to build up an unassailable lead. Craig also had a comfortable lead in 2nd, so it was case of keeping the footing and powering on for both men.

I had managed to nip ahead of both Craig White and Craig Gilmore during the first lap and had to fight quite hard to make sure there was no chance of being caught as we approached the brutal staircase for the second time. Thankfully, the last 400m or so allows for plenty of chances to check behind you and I had built up enough of a lead to come in 3rd, a whole 1 second faster than last year!

Shortly behind me, Craig W managed to just hold off a spirited surge from Craig G over the home straight to take 4th, and Chris saw off his old nemesis Kenny in 6th place. Margaret completed the running to take the ladies title.

Congratulations to both Kevin and Margaret for their victories, and many thanks to our army of supports and timekeepers – Mick, Joe, Kenny, Linda, Caroline, a flying visit from Andy and a guest appearance from Gordon!
