Carluke 10k

An impromptu decision on the Saturday night led me to running the Carluke 10k on the Sunday. I knew a friend from work would be there so thought it’d be good for the Monday morning banter. Good intentions were nearly destroyed by roadworks trying to get out of Glasgow and onto the M8. I made it to the John Cumming Stadium to register just after 11am, ready for an 11:30 start, and was met with a good family atmosphere aimed at raising money for the Beatson Cancer Charity. I was welcomed by my workmate, who introduced me to his Clyderunners gang and set off with them in what turned out to be a pretty hilly course, especially the first half. I worked my way up to 9th and held it alone for most of the race. Those in front were a good wee bit ahead but I kept 8th as a marker not to drift too far away from. It was all going well until I was nearing the end where the return of some gradual hills and a wee one just as we headed back into the stadium got me caught with little left to kick on. All in all, a good varied route and great local event which turned out just that wee bit more than 10k.

Happy with 10th and 42:05 in my first 10k race.

The race was won by David MacKintosh of Bellahouston Harriers in 36:36.

Most importantly, I won the bragging rights at work!

Thanks to all the marshals and happy faces cheering all the runners on. Recommend the race for next year! Some great pics can be found on flickr by Kevin Ramage. Check out the route on my Strava.
