This year’s Great Scottish Run 10K took place in cold, misty conditions, perfect for running. The contrast between doing club races of less than 100 runners and then doing a mass event like this (today’s race had 8333 runners!) is always interesting. We had a mass warm up by some guy in a kilt on top of a cherry picker. This was followed by someone famous (who I don’t know!?!) singing “Caledonia.” The race was then started by Olympic gold medal winners, Callum Skinner and Katie Archibald. Anyway, the race was the usual course of the last few years, which entails St. Vincent Street, Finneston, the Kingston Bridge, out and back through Govan/Ibrox, across the Squinty bridge, along Broomielaw before crossing the Clyde twice again, before the grandstand finish in Glasgow Green. The race was won by Jonathan Hopkins (Swansea Harriers) in a time of 30.21. The first lady was Josephine Moultrie (Victoria Park) in a time of 34.19.
The mighty Maryhill Harriers were out in force with a good turnout from runners from both the juniors and seniors sections of the club. After the mad scramble at the start where a lot of runners in this race take off too fast, things settled down around Finneston and I got myself in a pack of club runners I know. I for once ran with my Garmin to pace each kilometre and was happy to maintain about 3.40 most of the way round. At about 8.5 km, I decided to kick on and managed to catch another bunch of runners ahead and then pushed again at the 500M sign racing to the finish. Quite a few club members did really well today. Cat continued her return to form and both Caroline and Margaret were well under their predicted times:
63rd: Andy Sutherland (36.47)
202nd: Craig Gilmour (40.45)
786th: Catriona Nisbet (46.39)
1075th: Chris Hever (48.18)
1263rd: Amy Craig (49.16)
1574th: Caroline Hever (50.50)
2108th: Margaret Peebles (52.55)- Prov.
3683rd: Stephanie Knight (58.22)
7124th: Maureen Gallagher (1.15.33)
Also nice to see two of our juniors, Amy and Stephanie running today, as well as as Maureen, one of our life members of the club. A very enjoyable race, well organised and a great finish and support along Broomielaw and Glasgow Green.
