The first leg of this year’s Polaroid 10K series took place in Helensburgh at the brand new Hermitage Academy. For those of us doing
all four races, we picked up our snazzy running tops and very cool
Polaroid sunglasses at the registration. The course was a big loop
from one end of Helensburgh to the other. The race started along from
the school on Cardross Road. There was a few twists and turns in the
first 1K before a long straight on Drumford Road. We then met the only
hill on the course at about 3K before we turned onto West Montrose
Street. This took us along to the other end of Helensburgh where we
did a big loop back onto West King Street which took us all the way
back to East side of Helensburgh with the finish at the school. The
conditions were OK for running apart from the last 2K where we were
running into the wind. It was a great course with quite a lot of
support all the way round. As always, there was an excellent goody bag
at the end with plenty of water. The cakes available inside the school
were also one of the highlights! All in all, a very enjoyable start to
the Polaroid series.
There were a total of 963 runners. The male and female winners both
came from Shettleston Harriers. Tewoldeberhan Mengisteab won the race
in a time of 30.30 and Carol Setchell (37th) was the first female home
in a time of 36.28. The mighty Maryhill Harriers were well represented
(see results below). Special mention must go to John Edgar who smashed
his PB with a great performance in the blustery conditions.
103 Andrew Sutherland (39.06)
125 John Weir (40.10)
148 Gordon Curran (41.02)
455 John Edgar (48.23)
583 Fletcher Murdoch (51.00)
894 Evelyn Curran (1.02.03)
