Myself, Kieran and Natalie took part in the Brian Goodwin 10k on Friday 16th June at Glasgows Pollok Park. As always, the race brought together a strong field of club runners, with 109 of the 450 posting a sub 40 time, led by Olympians Callum Hawkins, Tewolde Menigsteab and course record holder Luke Traynor.
This was my 3rd 10k in as many weeks and on a course I enjoy, I had hopes of bettering my previous two times and getting back under the 41 minute mark. Kieran, Natalie and I lined up together and as was the case at last weeks Vale of Leven 10k, I took off a bit too fast and led the way for the first 5k. Despite the enthusiastic cheers of Caroline and Chris who had come along to support, I began to pay the price and was passed easily by Kieran and Natalie at around 6k. There was no chance of catching Kieran, who picked up the pace well to surge ahead, but I managed to keep Natalie in my sights as we came round the 2nd lap of Pollok Park and out onto Haggs Road for the final stretch. Despite a valiant effort I couldn’t make up the distance and finished in 41.05. Disappointed to miss out on my target time by such a narrow margin, but a good nights racing nevertheless and a course PB at least. Massive well done to my two club mates, who both ran superbly and on a cooler evening could easily have been looking at sub 40 times.
As always, a brilliant event put on by Bellahouston Harriers, with the post race beer and burger going down a treat along with all the biscuits in the goody bag. Beats bananas and water any day! Only complaint from me came when I got home and found a Run4It spot prize voucher buried at the bottom of my bag, sadly only redeemable on the night immediately after the race. No freebies for me this time!
The race was won, naturally, by Callum Hawkins who smashed the course record with a quite frankly ludicrous time of 29:14, followed closely behind by previous record holder Luke Traynor who also broke his own course best in 29:27. First female was Elspeth Curran of Kilbarchan in 36:28. Maryhill Harriers results below :
62nd Kieran Sullivan – 40:13
125th Natalie Somerville – 40:55
129th Scott Coulter – 41:05
