University 5 Mile Road Race

This year’s University 5-mile road race took place in unseasonally mild, damp conditions which were perfect for running. The course was the usual 2-lap truncated version of the Barge, starting at the bottom of the Vet School Hill and finishing just outside the sport centre. This year saw quite a strong field and a big increase in numbers which meant a fairly packed start. However, the long hill start meant the field was spread out quite quickly. In a very close finish, Marc Austin (Victoria Park) won the race in 25.24 from Paul Sorrie (Shettleston Harriers, 25.34). The first lady home was Mhairi Duff (29.30) from Dumfries Running Club. In a field of 211 runners, the Maryhill Harriers were out in force, this being our fourth race of the merit league. Extra competition was added by the fact that this was the first race that involved the new rule that anyone running a PB would get an extra five points.

The results were:
38th Andy Sutherland (29.20)- PB
71st Alan Richardson (31.31)- PB
118th Kieran Sullivan (34.33)- PB
147th Catriona Nisbet (38.04)
151st Raymond Stevenson (38.37)
159th Chris Hever (39.18)
178th Caroline Hever (41.56)
200th Margaret Peebles (47.12)
201st Fletcher Murdoch (47.41)

Many thanks to the Hares and Hounds of Glasgow University for organising a very enjoyable race.
