The annual trail race this year took place in glorious summer sunshine. Starting at the war memorial in Blanefield it was an 11k circular route that took in some stunning sights over the Campsie and Kilpatrick hills.
This was my first time running on terrain like this and I have to say that I really enjoyed it. On the downhill sections I remembered a tip to lean forwards and ‘throw’ yourself down – although I think it was luck that got me down without tripping over any stones. As I did not know the route, I had to gesticulate to Duncan on numerous occasions on where the correct route was. This soon caught me out on the West Highland Way part of the route where despite knowing it was too early I took a left in a fork. Luckily I realised my mistake soon enough and graciously Duncan waited to open a gate for me. This led to the toughest part of the course where it seems to go uphill for about 2 miles but soon enough it was back into Blanefield, where another series of short hills brought you to the finish, where Chris was waiting with water and Caramel Wafers
I was delighted with my first win as a Harrier, but huge thanks go to Duncan, Kieran and John who helped when I got lost. The real excitement was in the tight finish between Kieran, John and Mick. The latter was looking like he could pip them at the post until his calf seized up in the last 30 yards. Leading to a expletive filled monologue that can not be repeated for a family audience.
Overall I think that everyone thoroughly enjoyed the race in such fantastic conditions and would like to return for a Tuesday night session soon.
