Like last year our new season (2019-20) Merit League was kicked-off at the George Cummings Road Relays. The course was the same testing 2.7 mile loop as last year – full gas from the gun and try to keep the power and cadence going on the hills. After the final climb the long leg-stretching downhill is a welcome sight although after the left turn at the end runners are faced with a 80m or so sprint to the line and relay change-over.
This year we had a fantastic 13 harriers racing – two full men’s teams and one full women’s team with Chris and Susan running as renegade lone harriers to confuse the opposition ;-). It was tricky deciding on the teams as we had a good pool of quick runners but who had the current short, fast race form? Some were coming back from injuries, ramping-up general training, mid-marathon training, post-desert ultra epics, starting xmas handicap bluffing etc.
With Lochlann not running this year the pressure was on Kenny to outsprint a Hawkins – word may have leaked as I don’t think any raced ;-). There was some great running by everyone with plenty of times from last year being beaten, in some cases by large margins. Markers have been drawn for the rest of the season and already it looks like the 2019-20 Merit Leagues are going to be interesting…..
Quickest harrier of the day was Rory at 14.54 (2 secs quicker than last year) – nice one! Special mention go to Lynsey and Natalie: Lynsey took 1 min 13 secs off her time last year and finished as 4th fastest female vet – she continues her fantastic and ever-quicker form of the last few months. Natalie also ran a storming race, coming home as the 12th fastest female and 2nd fastest vet – brilliant! Finn’s ramping back up and Craig W was back racing in blue again – a great day was had by all and it was lovely to see friends from other clubs as well.
Thanks go out to Kilbarchan AAC for organising the event plus all marshals out on the course – another great event.
The fastest male of the day was Jonny Glen (Inverclyde AC) in 12:23. 50 full male teams finished.
The fastest female was Avril Mason (Shettleston) in 14:55. 22 full female teams finished.
