The weekend of 29-30th September saw Glasgow stage the Great Scottish Run with a Super Saturday consisting of a toddler dash, junior run and family mile. Sunday saw runners take to the streets for the 10k and half marathon.
Club colours were to be seen in both the 10K and half marathon with some great performances and PBs. Scott was also an official Duracell Bunny Pacer (1hr 50min) and looked resplendent in his pink fluffy bunny ears and backpack complete with flag. Yes – we do have a picture, head to our Flickr page (link at bottom) if you can’t wait
It was a pretty chilly morning and more or less dry apart from some light drizzle and then rain early in the afternoon. There was also a slight tail-wind for the final two miles which was a nice boost – mind you the noise from the crowds and charity buses over those last two miles was quite a boost in itself!
The 10K was off first and saw Andy storm to a great time of 37.42 and first harrier home – great to see that his months of ultra training hadn’t dented his 10K speed. Next in was Rory – a few weeks previously he’d clocked a 10K PB at just over 40 mins so a sub-40 was on the cards. He smashed that barrier though, coming home in 38.10 – a fantastic run! Mark also had a great run and he too clocked a sub-40 10K.
That left the half marathon harriers with some work to do……and they delivered J. Despite a toilet stop at 3 miles (at least I was well-hydrated….) I managed to clock a PB. Half time of the day though goes to Finn – he was hoping to sneak under 1hr 40 mins in his first half marathon. Out on the course he was running well and when he caught sight of the 1hr 35min pacer in Bellahouston Park he gave chase and never looked back, coming home in 1.32.38 for a PB over 7mins quicker than he’d hoped for. A cracking run, sub-90mins next Finn?
Scott’s watch died around the half-way point so he had to use the ‘pacing force’ to bring his posse of runners home within reach of their target then let them loose on the home straight to chase their own PBs. The marshals reclaimed the bunny ears and flag immediately after the finish so any hopes of subsequent pictures were dashed
Cat had a strong run and came home just after Scott. John and Susan came home just over the 2hr mark and very close to each other to round off a great day’s running by the mighty blues.
The 10K was won by Adam Craig in 29.43, first female was Gemma Steel in 34.00. 7309 runners participated.
The half marathon was won (for the second year in a row) by Chris Thompson in 1.02.07 with the first female being Mare Dibaba in 1.09.15. 8545 runners participated.
