The Bella Belter in Pollok Park on Friday 17th August was the last in the series of five races which make up the Tour of Clydeside. We didn’t have any harriers entered for the complete tour this year although Linda completed two of the earlier races to keep the other clubs on their toes. We fielded six harriers including Mick who was there to show us young ‘uns how to do it – support was on-hand from Caroline and Joe.
Prior to the run starting we all thought that the course followed the Brian Goodwin route which was a fast and flat route inside the park and outside on the roads. Only after the first 2.5k did it become apparent that we’d be running the hillier Dick Wedlock route which is entirely inside the park. I decided to adopt my usual race tactic of going off too fast and then fading before digging-in for the last mile or so but this time I went off even faster than ‘too fast’ as it was going to be a flat course…….
The windy and drizzly conditions pre-race actually turned out to be perfect for running with the mist keeping us cool and the park damping any wind effects. A slightly different affair from the Dick Wedlock in May where sun-cream and shades were the order of the day.
It was a good and enjoyable race and certainly easier than May due to the lower temps – despite my sprint start I managed to gauge my effort OK and took a minute off my PB. Mick had a great run and was second harrier home (plus 2nd in the M60 category) followed by James who dropped a gear to outsprint another runner sneaking up on him. Lynsey put in a great run to come home next with Cat gaining a position with a sprint on the home straight. The harriers were rounded off with Chris’s notorious fast finish – great stuff as he was still feeling the effects of a chest cold and hadn’t run for a week.
Encouragement from Joe and Caroline was very welcome as were some name checks and shout-outs for the mighty Maryhill out on the course.
The Belter was won by Darren McQuade in 33.55, first female was Becky Dunphy in 38.52.
Thanks to the entire Tour Team and all Bella Belter marshals out on the course for putting on a great race as well as the whole Tour Series which is already in the calendar for next year….
