The Glasgow University 5 mile Road Race took place this year on a fresh but dry day (except for a brief light shower on the first lap) with clear roads/paths and no ice in sight, a novelty after the extended cold weather.
We fielded 8 harriers to compete in what is in effect a truncated version of our Nigel Barge route (as well as our regular training grounds) so we were on home turf – shame that didn’t make the 2nd drag up Temple Road or the 2nd climb out of Dawsholm Park to Maryhill Road any easier!
A quick and slightly congested start up the Vet School hill saw us off at a good pace with the field spreading out pretty quickly as we climbed up to the cattle grid. Pre-race tactics had been casually thrown about (Merit League points were at stake after all complete with PB bonus points for this race) as we huddled in the warmth of Garscube Sports Centre before the race – Scott had an initial plan to beat Kieran but as the race progressed he switched tactics (or did he?) and managed to open up a gap and stayed clear of Kieran’s dangerous finishing kick. I went off reasonably quickly then settled into a pace and managed to pick off a few runners on the hills.
Elsewhere Cat and Kenny traded positions en route with Cat coming home ahead of Kenny in the end as well as first female harrier, congratulations to Cat. Congratulations also to Kenny and James who both clocked PBs – 5 Merit League bonus points in the bag for them. Chris’s fierce sprint finish gained him a place on the finish straight whilst Margaret looked strong as she entered the Garscube Estate but, like us all, had to work harder than we thought we should on the 2nd ascents.
On the course it was great to hear shouts of encouragement from Caroline at the top of Temple Road and Joe near the finish so thanks to them both for braving the fresh morning to cheer us on.
176 runners took part with the race being won by Stuart Gibson of Cambuslang Harriers in a time of 25.34 with the first female being Shona McIntosh of Hunters Bog Trotters in a time of 28.30.
Thanks go out to the Glasgow University Hares & Hounds for organising the race plus all the marshals around the course who did a great job and shouted encouragement to all runners throughout the whole race.
