8 Harriers reported bright and early today to attend the 4th event in our summer 5k series. This was to be the maiden run for many at the Drumchapel parkrun.
Set in Garscadden woods it is a challenging course and one that will push you to your limits – 92 meters of ascent mean it’s definitely not for a PB. That’s said the parkrun team were very welcoming and even gave the club a wee shout of at the start. (Free advertising!!!).
As the race started Kev was a bit slow off the blocks, possibly because he had to sprint 800 meters uphill to make the starting gun. At the front of the race we soon got into our stride and by halfway round the first lap Harriers were placing 3,4,5 and 6 on the road!
I had hoped that my secret beach running training camp last week at Southerness Holiday Park in Dumfriesshire would pay off and I pushed passed Scott and held Craig W at a reasonable distance. However in the third lap the first steep hill took my legs and I was passed by Scott and 4 other runners.
As ever the real race was between the 3 ‘titans’ Kenny, Chris H and James. James took the spoils this time and despite Kenny’s reccy last week he went too early again as Chris’ racing skills allowed him to take the position.
Linda (thankful for the cooling rain) came home as third female and then promptly ran home!
All agreed at the end that this is an excellent race for building speed for a ‘flat run’. Hopefully we can arrange another Harriers participation here soon.
