With the Dunky Wright 5K not running this year, we decided to use the Victoria Parkrun as this year’s 5K championship race.

It was a nice warm sunny morning with the usual three laps of the park around “swan lake.”

After doing the Ruchill mountains last week, it definitely seemed a lot easier. As it was our championship race and a nice day, there was a bumper thirteen Maryhill Harriers competing for the title. With our new fancy website showing everyone’s training runs on Strava and some of the amazing pace folk are doing on their long runs for their various marathon training, it seemed that there might be some good times and PBs today.

Despite the organiser saying that Parkruns are for fun and not a race, the start of the 5K took off very quickly. I started a few rows back as I always find having to overtake folk in the first 0.5K slows me down enough that I don’t go off too fast. Already Kevin had a good 20 metre lead on me but I tried to run a steady pace around the course keeping him in sight. I found the middle of the race pretty hard but was trying to keep a little at the end for a strong push in the last 0.5K. I was running in a group of four who managed to open a bit of a lead on me down the last straight round the pond. But as we came up the hill at the back of the course, I managed to close and overtake these guys before then pushing really hard to the finish. I managed to catch Kevin before the last turn off and another guy before the finish. A combination of Mick’s special fartleks (that’s a particular type of training run for any non-runners reading this post) and the good conditions meant that everyone did really well with several PBs and park run PBs today. The results were:

6th Andy Sutherland (17.45)- Men’s 5K Champion
8th Kevin Campbell (17.49)- PB
22nd Scott Coulter (19.18)
24th Kieran Sulliven (19.28)- Park Run PB
38th Craig Gilmour (20.20)
54th Lochlainn Henderson (20.51)
76th Mick McCartney (22.05)
95th James Prior (23.15)- Park Run PB
102nd Chris Hever (23.24)
104th Kenny Henderson (23.30)- PB
136th Caroline Hever (24.59)- Ladies 5K Champion
155th Margaret Peebles (25.57)
231st Catriona NIsbet (30.15)

After reading the comments about this race on our Facebook page, I just wanted to say well done to EVERYONE. Special mention to the folk who did PBs today (Kevin who seems to get a big PB every time he does a race and Kenny who is getting closer to Chris with every race). Also, good to see Cat still running strong and Mick in Maryhill blues and racing again.
