After being cancelled due to ice back in November, the Glasgow Uni 5 mile road race took place on the 18th of February. The course is similar to the Nigel Barge and takes in the vet school hill twice, along with the climb out of Dawsholm Park to Maryhill Rd, so this is not a flat 5 miles!

Eight Harriers arrived at the Garscube estate and I was amazed to find that both Andy and Kevin hadn’t shown up, so there was a chance of a rare 30 Merit League points for me. We started near the bottom of the vet school hill. At the top, Craig Gilmour was putting some pressure on me,no doubt  spurred on by the possiiblity of 30 points too, so I accelerated over the top of the hill and kept the pace up past the car wash and along Temple Rd. I just had to hope that I hadn’t worked too hard at the start. Conditions were perfect for running and I felt my marathon training starting to kick in as I was able to keep my pace reasonably high even on the second lap. I finished almost 2 minutes faster than my November 2015 effort and only 40 seconds behind my best time for this race, so I was pretty happy with my run.

Shettleston Harrier Paul Sorrie won the race in a time of 25:56, with Sophie Collins of Edinburgh Uni being the first female to finish in a time of 30:41.
