The Dunbartonshire Cross Country race at Balloch Country Park was once more a wet affair. And to make things a bit more interesting too the course went in a clock-wise direction after last year some young runners fell on the steep downhill near the castle.
There was a relatively small turn out of Harriers as many had chosen to go and do the Jimmy Irvine 10K. We had some support on the side lines from Mick (who would have run but said he had too much to drink the night before!), Kenny and Alistair.
Was initially anxious about the course in reverse but it was a much more enjoyable long sloping downhill to the water, although on the flip side a tough, steep relentless climb at the other side of the park.
Had a wee battle with a Dumbarton AAC runner who was getting name checked and cheered on by every marshall we passed. Managed to get ahead of her on the steep hill but then she overtook me on the flat towards the castle and was off. Kept her in my sights and as we approached the steep hill for the second time she started walking but I managed to keep moving albeit at a shuffling pace.
Got a nice wee “Come on Maryhill Harrier” from a speedy Glasgow Uni Hare and Hound bloke on the flat to the finish which gave me a wee boost. Was glad to cross the line before her!
Thanks to Mick, Kenny and Alistair for their support. Well done to young Andrew and Craig and to Margaret too for some really strong running.
