Clyde Stride

The Clyde Stride is a new event, a 40 mile trail race from Partick station to New Lanark, on 17th July aka Ferr Saturday. The motley crew of usual suspects plus many newbies, 92 strong- & not so strong- were briefed behind the station by Lee Maclean the race organiser before a 9am start at the expressway underpass.

A skinny young lad in pure white nike gear, long sleeves long shorts & socks, stormed off like a 10k runner– & kept it up to win in 5hrs 8mins– his Garmin I heard read 45miles reflecting his getting lost, a theme of the day! so what time would Grant Jeans, unattached!?! have made if he’d taken a map like me (I still took one wrong turn, maybe 10 to 15 mins lost)

Route followed the river where possible, past all the landmarks the SECC etc. first detour by Celtic Park, as Dalmarnock is a Games construction site. Offended a local by declining a swig from his cider can. Pure class. On past C’lang, 1st ch’pt, Newton, Bothwell, survived crossing Raith Interchange, to Strathclyde park & 2nd checkpoint of 3. Drop-bags, ie unsupported. Ginger beer is the new energy drink for me. Low spell after stopping too long there, around 20 miles, but picked up again, with some good chat along the way.

Major event in progress on the loch, the 2 burds in a boat rowing ch’ships, bloke with a megaphone shouting random noises at them, took the mind off the throwing up of the crisps.

First decent day for a while, 2 short sharp showers but a good running day. Took one wrong turn but who cares, really enjoyed the running as it got more rural. Local youths routefinding advice; “they went that way, honest”. Mostly a flat trail but some serious “undulations” nearer Lanark. Original route was to have followed higher up the Falls, amended thru hydro work & nesting peregines to a doubling back to finish at New Lanark. Beer, t-shirt, no pie this time.

A brilliant, scenic, friendly event all round. I was 75th from 85 finishers, in 8 hrs 23mins. Lucy Colquhoun of Carnethy was 2nd overall in 5hrs 27min. Full results on the race website, http://clydestride.webnode.com/ Can’t wait for next year!
